It is a federal requirement that all chemical waste containers be further protected through use of a secondary container. Secondary spill containment systems must hold 110% of the volume of the primary container in case of spills or container breakage, so select a container with an appropriate volume that holds at least 10% more than the largest bottle, carboy or drum you intend to use it with. EPA Regulation EPA 40 CFR 264.175 states in “Containment of Containers Containing Free Liquid” that:
The containment unit must underlie the containers and must be free of cracks or gaps and be sufficiently impervious to contain leaks, spills and accumulated precipitation.
The base of the containment unit must be sloped or designed to drain and remove liquids resulting from leaks, spills or precipitation, unless the containers are elevated or otherwise protected from contact with accumulated liquids.
The containment system must have sufficient capacity to contain 110% of the volume of containers or the volume of the largest container, whichever is greater.
