Food Waste

Food waste continues to become a serious problem in the United States. Nearly 35 million tons of food goes into landfills annually. It makes up the largest single material in landfills at 21% of the American Waste Stream. Methane (a greenhouse gas) produced by rotting food in landfills contributes to climate change thatis 25 times as potent as carbon dioxide.

EPA has recognized the need to sustainably manage food waste in America by implementing the Food Recovery Challenge . Since its introduction, the participants and endorsers have diverted over 606,000 tons of wasted food, resultingin over 88,500 tons donated to feed people, which would have otherwise become part of a landfill.
