About SmartCells® Antifatigue Technology
The SmartCells® patented structure consists of an integrated surface layer and an underlying array of cylindrical rubber cells, providing a stable surface supported by unstable rubber cells that soften as needed in response to surface activity. The cells adjust dynamically to varying types of impacts, forces and static loads applied to the surface in order to provide:
Reduced stress fractures and other chronic fatigue-related injuries caused by hard surfaces
Softer is Not Necessarily Better. Recent ergonomic research shows that the best possible health and safety solution for an anti-fatigue surface is a combination of critical elements working in concert, and not simply a softer mat. This concept formed the basis for SATECH's design for SmartCells® anti-fatigue technology.
To effectively reduce fatigue from prolonged standing, the mat surface must provide an optimal degree of firmness. It must gently yield to encourage small postural movements, yet not be so soft that it creates an unstable condition that causes muscles to work harder than necessary to maintain a standing position. The mat must also provide stability to ensure secure footing, and still cushion adequately under pressure. Our SmartCells® mats are also easy to clean, anti-slip, and static-safe.
SmartCells function like a spring to return energy. They have been designed to be "in-phase" with the movements of the body, providing a remarkable anti-fatigue characteristic that actually helps every subtle and overt movement involved in standing or walking work compared to other surfaces.

SmartCells® anti-fatigue mats are a simple solution which enables workers to stand comfortably for long periods or time. Manufactured from durable rubber, these mats consist of a matrix of hollow cylinders that function like a spring when compressed, providing a durable cushion that offers secure, stable footing and a unique energizing responsiveness not found in other antifatigue mats.
SmartCells® Mats are Better than Foam Mats at preventing fatigue. These rubber antifatigue mats provide a more effective cushioning solution than foam for many applications because SmartCells® gets softer as compressed rather than harder. SmartCells® anti-fatigue runners are custom made to order. Available in 2, 3 or 5 foot widths and variable lengths, these antifatigue runners are constructed from mat segments joined together with a unique connector system. Runners can be rolled up, partially disassembled or completely disassembled for area cleaning or other purposes. The solid rubber edges resist damage and warpage.

SmartCells® Anti-Fatigue Platforms (custom)SmartCells® anti-fatigue platforms consist of molded 3' x 3' pads which are custom cut and installed to fit any work station configuration. The aluminum or molded-rubber ramps deliver sturdy edge systems that are safe and durable. Aluminum ramps may be secured to the floor or attachable rubber ramps may be used to create free-standing systems.
SmartCells platform pads can be removed as necessary to accommodate cleaning cycles or changes in the work environment. Platforms may be provided as a floor attached or free-standing system.

Results of a 2003 worker productivity study was reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) November 12, 2003 – Volume 290, No. 18: “Lost productive time from common pain conditions among active workers costs an estimated $61.2 billion per year… The majority (76.6%) of the lost productive time was explained by reduced performance while at work and not work absence…”
According to the study, 12.6% of workers experience a loss of productivity due to the following pain conditions: 5.4% headache; 3.2% back pain; 2.0% musculoskeletal pain; and 2.0% arthritis pain. The study further reports an average loss of 4.6 hours per week per person who experiences debilitating pain. Since the majority of this loss is at work as reported, then employers are losing an average of 3.5 hours per week, or 23 days per year, of productive time when a worker is in pain (76.6% x 4.6 hours).
SATECH’s anti-fatigue technology has been optimized to reduce the pain and fatigue associated with standing work. Since standing workers frequently report back and musculoskeletal pain conditions, SmartCells can help reduce 41%* of the pain associated with lost productivity (3.2% back pain and 2.0% musculoskeletal pain).
