Denatonium benzoate is famously known to be the most bitter chemical compound, with a 0.05 ppm for the benzoate and a 0.01 pm for the saccharide. MacFarlan Smith was responsible for discovering the compound in 1958 while doing research on local anesthetics. It is a quaternary ammonium cation and can be obtained by the quaternization of lidocaine which is classified as a popular anesthetic. 

Denatonium Saccharide, also known as denatonium benzoate, is used to denature ethanol and used in rubbing alcohol as an inactive ingredient. Ungraded products supplied by Spectrum are indicative of a grade suitable for general industrial use or research purposes and typically are not suitable for human consumption or therapeutic use.
