CP Lab Safety Commends the University of Arizona
The University of Arizona received an award for outstanding efforts in food recovery from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Through the collaborative effort of students, food service staff and university leaders, with the Tohono O’odham Nation’s San Xavier Co-Operative farm and the city of Tuscan, food recovery increased by 1,232% between 2013 – 2014. Over the last year, their efforts diverted 3.4 million pounds of food waste, landscape debris and manure from being thrown in a landfill.
Food waste continues to become a serious problem in the United States. Nearly 35 million tons of food goes into landfills annually. It makes up the largest single material in landfills at 21% of the American Waste Stream. Methane (a greenhouse gas) produced by rotting food in landfills contributes to climate change thatis 25 times as potent as carbon dioxide.
EPA has recognized the need to sustainably manage food waste in America by implementing the Food Recovery Challenge . Since its introduction, the participants and endorsers have diverted over 606,000 tons of wasted food, resultingin over 88,500 tons donated to feed people, which would have otherwise become part of a landfill.
