Azithromycin is a semisynthetic macrolide antibiotic, as well as an antibacterial prescription medicine that is made to treat bacterial infections such as respiratory diseases, acute sinus and ear infections, chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, and throat/tonsil infections. 

Azithromycin, Dihydrate, an antibiotic used in the treatment of bacterial infections, is considered an azalide which is a subclass of the macrolide antibiotic, derived from erythromycin.
