Bio-Safety in the Lab Training Course

Real-world lab safety principles Zoomed to you or delivered on a DVD. Biosafety in the Laboratory (BITL) is an introduction to the principles of biosafety, including guidelines and regulations, decontamination and disinfection, as well as disposal and shipment of biological materials. Facility and equipment design, medical surveillance and risk assessments will also be covered. Participants will be introduced to key biosafety reference materials and learn how to use them to perform basic biological risk assessments and establish appropriate levels of containment. We will review best practices to minimize the risk of laboratory-acquired infections and standard precautions for proper handling of microorganisms. Discussions will be limited to guidelines for safely handling microorganisms at both biosafety level 1 (BSL1) and biosafety level 2 (BSL2) with minimal introduction to biosafety level 3 (BSL3).

Format options:

• DVD Program: DVD Discs are convenient and can be used repeatedly for training purposes. You own the DVD and can play it for yourself or your colleagues. The DVD option covers all the course topic presentations but doesn't include interactive quizzes or a certificate of completion. Physical DVDs will be mailed via USPS and require a DVD player to view.
  
  
• On-Demand program: Online Video Courses offer easy online access and a more in-depth learning experience for a single person. You receive a user id and password. Each topic has a multi-question quiz. You need to score 70% or higher to pass the course and receive a certificate of completion. Upon passing the on-demand course, you can earn graduate credits through the Lab Safety Institute's affiliation with the University of San Diego. (Inquire for more details on how to get course credit.) You will receive access to Lab Safety Institute's instructors' expert advice via e-mail throughout the course, plus videos, worksheets and quizzes designed to simulate the in-person experience. Video courses attempt to mimic live safety training classes and prepare you to engage your organization's safety program.
