Chemical Name: N-Methyl-N-nitroso-p-toluenesulfonamide

CAS Number: 80-11-5

Molecular Formula: C8H10N2O3S

Synonyms: Diazald, N-Methyl-N-nitroso-p-toluenesulfonamide, N-Methyl-N-nitrosotoluene-4-sulphonamide, Diazale, DIAZOGEN

Applications: N-Methyl-N-nitroso-p-toluenesulfonamide, well-known as Diazald and Diazogen, is a useful and safe reagent for the generation of diazomethane, a reactant used is organic synthesis to methylate organic molecules such as fatty acids, phenols, heterocycles, and a myriad of chemical scaffolds generating new compounds and analytes for chemical analysis. With these properties Diazogen is favored for the synthesis of diazomethane, compared to reagents like N-methyl-N-nitrosourea and N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine, which are toxic, mutagenic and thermally unstable.

Reaction Methods: To prepare diazomethane, in the past, chemists used especially designed apparatuses that were devoid of ground glass joints, which causes diazomethane to explode dangerously, and special precautions and training were needed. Using new methods and reagents such as diazogen or diazald, ordinary glassware is used and potassium hydroxide is used to generate the diazomethane, which is distilled in the reaction with ether and added to the substrates.

Uses in Analytical Chemistry-Biochemistry of Un-esterified Lipids: Unesterified lipids are readily detected as the methyl esters in cellular extracts.
